About Sarvangasana
Sarvangasana, commonly known as the Shoulder Stand, is a foundational inverted yoga posture where the body is lifted vertically, supported by the shoulders, upper arms, and core. In this pose, the legs extend straight upward while the chin gently tucks toward the chest, creating a firm “chin lock” known as Jalandhara Bandha. Sarvangasana is often called the “queen of all asanas” because it influences almost every system in the body – hormonal, circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems. It is traditionally practiced after proper warm-up and under guidance to ensure safe alignment of the neck and spine.
Benefits of Sarvangasana
Sarvangasana offers a wide range of benefits, both physical and physiological. Its inverted nature helps improve blood circulation, especially toward the brain and upper body, enhancing clarity, focus, and energy levels. The posture stimulates the thyroid and parathyroid glands, supporting hormonal balance and improved metabolism. It also strengthens the shoulders, core, and legs while calming the nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety. Regular practice of Sarvangasana supports better digestion, enhances sleep quality, and boosts overall vitality, making it a valuable addition to a balanced yoga routine.
